Making Jump Rings
YOU WILL NEED:
• Round-nosed pliers
• Flat-nosed pliers
• 18- or 20-gauge wire
• Jeweler’s saw
• Various sized straight mandrels (not tapered)
• Bench pin
TECHNIQUE:
To make jump rings from wire stock, first you must decide what sized jump rings you need to make. For instance, if you plan on suspending some tiny delicate pearls from an earring post, you would need a skinny mandrel and high-gauge thin wire.
To make jump rings, wrap the wire around the mandrel as many times as needed to make the desired number of jump rings (one wrap around the mandrel produces one jump ring). Once complete, slide the “spring” off the mandrel and hold it with your round-nosed pliers against your bench pin. Begin cutting each ring from the spring using your jeweler’s saw. As each jump ring falls off you will notice a very slight kink to each one; once loaded in place, close the gap of the jump ring using flat-nosed pliers.
TIP Jump Ring Tip
Use a disposable wooden mandrel such as a pencil, chopstick, or dowel. Once wrapped, keep the spring in place and cut through the wood and spring using your jeweler’s saw. This technique allows you to hold the spring more firmly with the wood and does not allow much movement during cutting. The wooden dowel is destroyed for each batch of jump rings but many find it easier to work with.
